Winter Seasonal tips

1. Keep poinsettias in bright light and water as top of the soil becomes dry.

2. Check stored produce and tender flower bulbs for rot or excessive moisture.

3. Cuttings from early spring flowering shrubs such as forsythia, Cornelian Cherry or Witch Hazel can be forced to bloom indoors about mid-January.  Later flowering trees such as Quince, Cherries or Redbud are best if started in late February or mid-March.

4. Wood ashes increase the soil pH and should only be applied to gardens if need after a soil test. If in doubt ashes are best applied to the lawn, since grass tolerate a higher pH and the area is usually larger.
